Thick, Green Algae Covers 200 Square Miles of Yellow Sea

by China Water Risk 15 July, 2011

July 2011 – Almost 200 square miles (500 square kilometres) of China’s Yellow Sea has been covered by a massive bloom of green algae and officials from the North China Sea Marine Forecasting Centre of State Oceanic Administration are expecting it to spread.

The algae bloom, though not toxic, is threatening the Sea’s marine life. Researchers still do not know the causes behind the massive bloom of algae, which was first seen in 2007.
