Riots in Haimen Halts Construction of Coal-fired Power Plant

21 December 2011 – Proposals for a coal-fired power plant in the southern Chinese town of Haimen in Guangdong province have been put on hold due to violent demonstrations. Unrest began when thousands of residents gathered to demand a coal-fired plant be moved due to concerns of pollution and resulting health issues.
Residents surrounded the local government building and blocked the Shenzhen-Shantou expressway. Tensions were raised over the 5.7 billion yuan Huadian Power International power plant which broke ground in October. For the full story … click here
