Drought Disrupts Shipping on Yangtze

May 2011 – Water levels on China’s Yangtze River have reached a 50 year low and the government has had to close a 228-kilometer stretch to ocean-going vessels in an effort to prevent ships from bottoming out. The river is the country’s longest waterway and is indispensible to the economies of many of the cities along its route.
