About the AIIB
The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) is a multilateral development bank with a mission to improve social and economic outcomes in Asia. AIIB invests in sustainable infrastructure, including water infrastructure, in Asia and beyond. The Bank began operations in January 2016 and approved its first water project in March 2017. To date, AIIB’s Board of Directors has approved up to USD1.4 billion for seven water projects in six economies.
What their Water Sector Strategy is about
Earlier this year, AIIB developed a draft Water Sector Strategy which articulates the role the Bank can play in helping its members address water infrastructure-related challenges. The draft Water Sector Strategy aligns itself to the global agenda of ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all (United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 – Water) and adopts the core principles of promoting sustainable infrastructure, integrated resources management, mobilizing private capital and efficiencies and adopting innovative technology in its implementation.
Aside from upscaling sustainable financing and optimizing development outcomes in the sector, the draft Water Sector Strategy also highlights the Bank’s vision to continuously foster strategic collaborations with key development and knowledge partners to tackle the institutional and policy complexity of the sector.
