Intl Symposium on The Cryosphere in a Changing Climate

12 February, 2017 - 17 February, 2017

This is the first international symposium to bring together three of the leading international organizations in the field of cryospheric research: IGS, IACS and CliC. The theme of the conference, ‘The Cryosphere in a Changing Climate’, is global in scope with a focus on physical processes within the cryosphere and interactions between the cryosphere and the climate system.

Topics will include (but are not limited to):

  • Contribution of glaciers and ice sheets to sea-level changes, past, present and future
  • Ice–ocean interactions in a changing climate
  • Cryospheric feedbacks to climate change, including polar amplification of climate
  • Snow and glacier hydrology, and changing runoff in a warming climate
  • Emerging areas of cryosphere/climate research

Water-nomics of the Hindu-Kush–Himalayas: mobilizing business and investors to secure Asia’s freshwater in a changing climate

Date: 13 February, 2017
Time: 1700 – 1715

Cryo event

CWR’s Feng Hu will be presenting at the symposium to advance the water-nomics conversation, focusing on the Hindu-Kush–Himalayan (HKH) region. With climate change evident in the region, at stake is not only Asia’s largest ‘bank’ of freshwater reserves but the 211 million people living in the HKH region, as estimated by ICIMOD. This region is also the source of ten major rivers, which provide water to 1.3 billion people. These ten river basins are key to the economic growth of eight countries, including China and India.

Moreover, the impact of the HKH region’s water risks and climate change extend beyond the foot of the Himalayas and have implications for global economy and trade. Despite its gravity, it is often difficult for stakeholders to grasp issues around water and climate change in the HKH region, hence the lack of financing towards the protection of it.

This talk aims to fill the knowledge gap by providing a clear picture of challenges faced by the HKH countries in balancing water security and economic growth in the face of climate change, as well as arising economic risks for the global economy and business.
